Seasonal Weddings in the Lake District

Choose Your Perfect Season

Introducing our seasonal weddings guide

One of the loveliest parts of wedding planning is choosing when to get married. The time of year you choose sets the tone for your seasonal wedding, whether it’s your flowers, outfits, food or the atmosphere on the day itself.

At Cote How, tucked away in the heart of the Lake District, we’re lucky to experience the beauty of all four seasons. Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement, a relaxed micro-wedding, or a full-day celebration, each season brings something different to your wedding day.

In this blog, we’ll take you through the seasons one by one, sharing what makes each time of year special. Whether you’re drawn to spring blossoms, summer sunshine, autumn colour, or winter cosiness, read on to discover which season might be the one for you.

Spring: A Fresh Start and Romantic Florals

Spring — it just feels lighter, doesn’t it? A fresh start, a feeling that anything is possible. In the Lakes, new life is everywhere you look. Snowdrops push through the frost, lambs play in the fields, and the landscape wakes from winter’s sleep.

At Cote How, spring weddings are full of quiet beauty. Bluebells carpet Rydal Woods, and cherry blossom drifts across the terrace like nature’s confetti. The Lakes are peaceful, making it the perfect time for a relaxed wedding celebration.

Spring florals are delicate and meaningful, like fragrant narcissi and romantic peonies. Fresh-tasting wedding menus celebrate the season with buttery new potatoes, tender asparagus, and herb-crusted Lakeland lamb; perfect with a sweet elderflower cocktail.

As days grow longer and nature bursts into life, a spring wedding is a breath of fresh air, joyful and hopeful. Whether it’s a relaxed gathering or an adventurous elopement in the fells, Spring is the perfect season to begin your next chapter.

Here’s our seasonal weddings in spring (March to May) summary:

  • Quieter than summer — easier to book venues and local accommodation
  • Fewer tourists — peaceful for photos and guest travel
  • Gardens and woodlands begin to bloom
  • Weather can be changeable — have a backup for outdoor ceremonies
  • Seasonal flowers: narcissi, muscari, peonies
  • Fresh local menus with spring vegetables and lamb
  • Consider: Layered outfits, umbrellas, and indoor/outdoor flexibility

Summer: Light, Laid-Back and Full of Life

In Cumbria, summer holidays are spent exploring nature’s playground. A Lake District summer wedding captures the same joy — happy couples barefoot on warm grass and the golden evenings of longer, light-filled days.

At Cote How, summer weddings are all classic country charm. Lavender and roses scent the air, woodland paths offer shady retreats, and the lake invites you to a refreshing paddle. If you’re feeling adventurous, Rydal Caves provides a breathtaking backdrop for wedding portraits.

For summer wedding outfits, floaty dresses and linen blazers suit the relaxed vibe of a private garden party. Cocktails on the terrace and festoon-lit dancing make unforgettable wedding day memories.

Summer wedding bouquets are blowsy and fragrant. Sunflowers or daisies from summer meadows, and flower crowns are the perfect choice for woodland style.

Wedding menus offer classic, seasonal favourites. Try delicate salmon followed by strawberry meringue, or a Mediterranean-style grazing table for rustic, al fresco dining.

Summer is peak season in the Lake District, with lots to entertain wedding guests. Explore the fells, or cruise on Lake Windermere. Festivals and food events make for a busy summer timetable.

Summer Season Wedding Top Tips (June – August)

  • Longest daylight hours — ideal for late ceremonies and golden hour photos
  • Warmest weather, though occasional showers still possible
  • Peak tourist season — book accommodation and suppliers early
  • All local attractions open — great for wedding weekends
  • Flowers in full bloom: roses, peonies, sunflowers
  • Consider: Lighter fabrics, sunscreen, water stations, shade for guests

Autumn: Rich, Romantic and Wonderfully Cosy

Autumn is when the Lake District is a painter’s dream.  Like New England in the fall, the area is famous for spectacular autumn colour, and a breathtaking setting for autumn weddings.

At Cote How, our decor brings the outdoors in with ivy, ferns, and trailing greenery, creating a woodland feel. Forest greens, earthy tweeds, and burnt orange add warmth, perfect for cosy wedding celebrations. As the air outside turns crisp, our fireside becomes the heart of the house.

Autumn wedding bouquets of dahlias, chrysanthemums and berries look gorgeous tied with velvet ribbons or twine.

For wedding dining, consider local dishes such as Herdwick lamb or wild mushroom risotto. Grasmere Gingerbread or Sticky Toffee Pudding are famous Cumbrian treats.

Autumn wedding breaks in the Lakes are good for the soul. Farmer’s markets and the Taste Cumbria Food Festival are heaven for foodies. Wrap up for woodland walks, explore historic castles, or brave a last wild swim before winter sets in.

Autumn Seasonal Weddings At a Glance (September – November)
  • Beautiful autumn colours for photos
  • Cooler, crisp air — especially in the evenings
  • Less busy than summer — more relaxed guest travel and planning
  • Seasonal produce: mushrooms, lamb, root veg, gingerbread
  • Autumn flowers: dahlias, chrysanthemums, berries
  • Consider: Wraps, tweeds or thicker fabrics, indoor spaces for warmth

Winter: Intimate, Magical and Full of Heart

There’s nothing more magical than a winter wedding – twinkling lights, candlelit warmth, and time with loved ones. And it’s not just for Christmas! A winter wedding is the perfect way to embrace the winter season – and who doesn’t love sipping a spiced cocktail by a roaring fire?

The Lake District in winter is atmospheric. Snow-capped fells, frosty woodlands, and still lakes create a dramatic backdrop. At Cote How, the log fire crackles in our cosy drawing room, and a warm welcome always awaits.

Winter wedding style is effortlessly elegant. Think vintage-inspired gowns, rich velvets, and snug faux-fur capes. Ivy and holly dress the fireplaces, while lanterns create an intimate, romantic feel. Winter wedding bouquets of hellebores, anemones, and silvery eucalyptus add a seasonal touch. Deep berry colours or winter whites are classic at this time of year.

A winter wedding menu is indulgent. Hearty dishes like beef bourguignon and cauliflower rarebit warm the soul. End the evening with a warming whisky hot toddy—pure winter wedding bliss.

Winter Seasonal Wedding Secrets (December – February)

  • Seasonal florals: hellebores, holly, berries, eucalyptus
  • Winter menus: slow-cooked dishes, puddings, hot drinks
  • Consider: Long-sleeved dresses, warm layers, cosy cover-ups for photos outdoors
