Autumn in the Lake District is breathtakingly beautiful. It’s the perfect location for an autumnal wedding! The colours, landscape, and weather are a constant source of inspiration to artists, poets, adventurers… and wedding planners! It’s one of our favourite times of year at Cote How, and September and October are particularly special. In this blog, we’ll share some of our favourite autumn wedding ideas to inspire you too…happy planning!

How do you know if an Autumn wedding is for you?

Are you the kind of couple who enjoy the summer, but secretly can’t wait for the nights to start drawing in? Do you love a snuggly jumper and woolly socks, or a hot chocolate by a cosy fireside? Does the smell of woodsmoke create a sense of excitement, like a child on bonfire night? If so, then an Autumn wedding would probably be your dream. Naturally inspiring

Can you remember collecting leaves, acorns, and other natural treasures for a school nature table? Subtle references to seasonal changes, such as leaf motifs, are an elegant choice for invitations, wedding veils, or accessories. Around Cote How there are hand-painted flora, foilage and trees to reflect the natural world around us. Chestnut-coloured, polished wooden ring boxes remind us of the joy of collecting conkers in an ancient woodland. A harvest-themed ‘montage’ (think pumpkins and berries) creates a nostalgic display for wedding accessories.

Scents and sensibility

Nothing evokes a feeling more than a scent or fragrance. Autumn is associated with a variety of warm, comforting, and earthy scents. The smell of woodsmoke creates a cosy feeling of ‘home’. Cedar reminds us of autumn forests, whereas apple and cranberry are harvest fragrances. Often blended with vanilla or jasmine for a sweet comforting aroma, autumnal-scented candles are the perfect wedding favour. Wedding cakes are a sweet and delicious treat that can be tailored to suit an autumn wedding. Try a rustic, semi-naked sponge flavoured with orange or blueberry. Pumpkin, carrot and ginger are other autumnal flavours for a taste of the countryside. The Lake District is famous for its Grasmere gingerbread, a tasty wedding favour to gift to your autumn wedding guests.

A celebratory toast for autumnal celebrations

As the days grow shorter and the nights draw in, we love to welcome our guests with a warming, spiced cocktail. Ruby red and crimson orange drinks served by the fireside guard against the autumn nip in the air and make guests feel at home. A visit to one of Cumbria’s artisan, local distilleries is a great way to bond with bridesmaids and groomsmen. Or why not try an autumn foraging experience? A great idea for any lake lovers.

Autumn is a photographer’s dream. Golden light, ever-changing skies and the vibrant colour of fells and foilage create a stunning backdrop for wedding portraits. A pre-wedding shoot on a woodland walk, kicking up the fallen leaves hand in hand, is wildly romantic.

Autumn colours inspire memorable wedding ideas and details. Choose suits and wedding gowns in colours found on the hillsides and in the forests as summer fades. What could be better than marrying your best friend and soul mate, in a blaze of autumn colour, then retiring to toast marshmallows on an open fire or sink into a hot-tub under the stars? An autumn wedding in the Lake District is a glorious package, wrapped in a warm hug and tied with a golden bow. It really is no surprise that Wordsworth called it, “The loveliest spot that man hath found.”
