About Cote How
Cote How is an historical, exclusive five star venue situated in the heart of the Lake District. Naturally secluded by river fell and woodland, our intimate 16th century establishment specialises in creating unique, memorable celebrations of all kinds. Four acres of grounds with an adjacent field lead down to the lake shore of Rydal Water, the bluebell woods and the River Rothay, with a picturesque wooden footbridge leading to Rydal Church, just 200 metres away.
Our vision and values:
Proprietor, Caroline Langham, moved to Cote How with her young family in 2006, and since then, has worked tirelessly to create a successful and inspiring establishment that reflects her belief that high quality hospitality and tourism practices can have a positive impact on the landscape, local community and environment. It is essential to her that your stay at Cote How is an exceptional experience, not just a bed for the night.
All aspects of Cote How's activities are committed to promoting environmental and community sustainability, whilst providing a first class level of quality and personal service. We source only local, sustainable products, minimising our environmental impact and where possible, support local producers and businesses.
Not only is Caroline a keen hillwalker, but she is regularly persuaded to cycle up large hills, and has experienced kayaking the River Rothay from her front door. She takes part in looking after the landscape she loves so much, and since 2006 has co-ordinated community work parties to tackle invasive species, including Japanese Knotweed and Himalayan Balsam.
She also works with the Westmorland Red Squirrel Society to support Red Squirrel conservation, and fundraises for Nurture Lakeland, donating to local conservation and access improvement projects.
As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Cote How has won numerous awards over the years, recognising the continually high standards with regards to both their product and level of service. Most recent accolades include 'Five stars for the Lake District's only environmentally gold accommodation', awarded by Visit Britain in November 2014; the 'gold award' from Green Tourism Business Scheme in 2013 (Cote How was the very first tourism business in the North West of England to achieve this award in 2007, scoring a massive 96% on their Environmental Management Audit); and as runner up in the 'Sustainable Tourism Awards' in 2011, by Cumbria Tourism.
